The February 2006 Online WCQ Review

The Online World Championship Qualifiers kicked off this month and an impressive 65 players gathered to try and win a bye into Day 2 of October's Online World Championship. Lurker Swarm was the order of the day, appearing in no less than half of the top 8 decks. Two others were Orc Swarm variants, leaving only one pure Corsair deck and one Evil Men deck that went for Frodo with Bill Ferny!
The Free Peoples sides were far more varied, including some interesting new deck ideas. Fourth-place catacasa played a new twist on an old theme: Smeagol Choke, revolving around Swear by the Precious. This nasty maneuver-phase card either discards a minion or makes all minions strength -2 to prevent. Not a good choice for any swarm deck!
Also making an appearance was the Refuge deck, which uses many companions from different cultures and lots and lots of healing, thanks to Refuge's text, which lets you discard a companion to heal a companion.
With all the swarm, it's also no surprise that an Elf Archery deck made the scene. Let Fly can do a staggering number of wounds if both a Mountain Troll and a sea of orcs are on the table.
