Joining A League

To join a League go to the League Lobby by clicking the 'League Play' button in the Main Lobby. The League Lobby has three sets of queues. The top group contains Waiting Leagues, the middle contains already existing Leagues that you can join and the bottom group shows any Leagues you are already in.

Joining a League that has not yet started

If you would like to join a league and play in it from the first day or, if there are no existing leagues that appeal to you, you can join a queue to launch a new league. First, review the various details of the different Waiting Leagues and make sure the play format and the use/exclusion of the Race to Mount Doom rules are to your liking! When you find a League you'd like to play, double-click on the queue and you'll see a window pop-up telling you how many Event Passes needed and if you'd like to join, simply click the 'join' button (if you are missing anything, you will see the entry fee listed in red and you will only be allowed to select 'cancel'). If you are joining a Sealed League, you will usually need to select a Starter Deck from the drop down menu just above the 'join' and 'cancel' buttons. This puts you in the waiting list of that League. When the number of players waiting in this queue reaches the number listed in the 'Min' column, a League will form!

A couple of things to note...

  • You don't need to be waiting in the Lobby to have your name be on the list for the League. Once you've signed up you are free to wander around, play some games, go trading or even log off. Unless you actively decide to leave the queue (just right-click on the queue for that option) you will remain in the queue until it reaches enough players and your new League launches.
  • You can be signed up for multiple Waiting Leagues, play in as many as you'd like!
  • Be sure to check and see if there's an existing League that has the play format you'd like. If that League is in its 1st or 2nd week you may wish to join that one instead of waiting for a new one to start. Keep in mind, you can join a League during ANY week, even it's last week, though the later you join, the more catching up you'll have to do.
  • When you join a Sealed League, a drop-down menu will appear in your joining window. Be sure to select the starter you want! You will have the choice of any starter (that is usable in that format) you own but once you join the League you cannot change your starter! So if there's a Starter Deck you like best, remember to select it!

Drop-down menu for joining Sealed Leagues

Joining an existing League

You can join any League that has already started. Browse the middle section of queues for a League that suits your fancy and when you find it, double-click on that queue to bring up the joining window. This window will tell you how many Event Passes are needed and, if it's a Sealed League, offer a drop-down menu with which you can select your Starter Deck. When you join an existing League there is no wait, it immediately appears in the bottom group of queues along with any other Leagues you might be playing in. You can double-click on any of the queues in the bottom section to be taken to that League's League Room.

Joining Late

When you join an existing League it's possible that one or several of that League's weeks have happened before you arrived. Joining a League late in the game does NOT prevent you from winning that League but it does require that you devote some time to catching up! If you join late, the following things happen...

  • For each week you missed, you get that week's games added to the total games you could play. Most Leagues allow 5 games per week to be played for points. If you joined on the 3rd week, you could play 15 games for points in that week. If you don't use all those 15 games that week, unplayed games will transfer over to the subsequent weeks.
  • If you late join a Sealed League that allows the addition of Boosters every week or two, you will be able to add any you missed. If a League allowed an additional RotL Booster to be added on Week 2 and a Siege of Gondor Booster on Week 3 and you joined on Week 3, you would be allowed to add those two Boosters to your card collection immediately upon entering (you would not have to wait until your second week to add the first Booster).
  • Joining late is the same as having joined a League on Day 1 but not having played a single game until weeks into the process. It can be very exciting to play lots of games from the underdog position -- just make sure you're up for playing lots of games if you join late!

Requirements for Joining a League

Joining a League requires 10 Event Passes. In the case of Sealed Leagues, you must also bring a Starter of your choice (one that is legal for that particular block). In Sealed Leagues you will get a Draft Pack opened and added to your limited card pool at the start of the League.

Observing a League

Along with the option to Join late you'll see the option to 'Observe' when you double-click or right-click on a Started League. This takes you into that League's League Room without joining the League. While you're there you can chat with the players and observe any games that permit observers.
