Shadow and Free Peoples Areas
The Shadow and Free Peoples (FP) Areas are where all cards (except sites and conditions played upon sites) are played. You play a card to either the Shadow or FP Area depending on what kind of card it is. These two areas are each divided further. The FP Area has both a Fellowship area (where you play companions, possessions, and conditions that play on companions) and a Support area (where you play allies, most conditions, and possessions that do not play on a specific companion). The Shadow has a minion area and a support area that function the same as their counterparts on the FP side.
In these areas, the active player's cards are always shown by default. For example, if John is the active FP player, his cards are displayed in the FP Area. By using the small avatar icons located above and below the twilight pool counter, you can cycle the Free Peoples and Shadow containers. The avatar icon corresponds to the player who's cards you are looking at.
So for instance, you're the shadow player, and in the regroup phase you want to see what cards are in your fellowship's support area, so you know what you can discard. By default, the Free Peoples container is displaying your opponent's cards (because you're the Shadow player), but by clicking the lower avatar icon, in the Free Peoples area, you can toggle the display to your cards.
Also note that the two containers (Shadow and Free Peoples) are independent of each other and can be toggled to different players.
- Left-clicking the avatar icons toggles to the next player's cards in that container
- Right-clicking (ctrl-clicking for Macintosh users) the avatar icons returns that container to the active player's cards
- Right-clicking (ctrl-clicking for Macintosh users) the twilight pool returns both the Shadow and Free Peoples containers to their active players.
Also in this area, you'll find the Twilight Pool. Unlike the offline game, the online game tracks the twilight pool as a numeric value, rather than a number of tokens; the function is the same however.
Above or below the Twilight Pool indicator is the initiative indicator, a small tab displaying The One Ring. This tab will always be in the side of the player(s) who has initiative - below if the Free Peoples player has initiative, or above if the Shadow player(s) has initative.
